Soft Washing vs Pressure Washing: What is the Difference?

Soft Washing vs Pressure Washing: What is the Difference?

Customers ask me this all the time: what is the difference between soft washing and pressure washing, and which one does my house need? It is a great question, because using the wrong one can actually damage your property.

Let me break it down in plain English.

    What is Pressure Washing?

Pressure washing uses high-pressure water — sometimes up to 3,000 PSI or more — to physically blast dirt, grime, moss, and stains off a surface. It is powerful stuff. Think of it like a sandblaster but with water.

Pressure washing is brilliant for hard, durable surfaces:

    - Concrete driveways with oil stains and tyre marks

    - Brick walls with ingrained grime

    - Stone paths and pavers

    - Concrete patios and pool surrounds

On these surfaces, high pressure is exactly what you need to shift years of build-up. The surface can take it without damage.

    What is Soft Washing?

Soft washing uses low-pressure water — about the same as a garden hose — combined with specialised cleaning solutions that kill mould, lichen, and algae at the root. Instead of blasting the growth off, the chemical does the work.

Soft washing is the right choice for:

    - Weatherboards and painted cladding

    - Plaster and stucco finishes

    - Roof surfaces (especially painted roofs)

    - Any surface where high pressure could cause damage

The big advantage of soft washing is that it kills the spores, not just the visible growth. Pressure washing might blast the green off today, but if the spores are still alive, the mould will be back in a few months. Soft washing keeps surfaces clean for 2 to 3 years because the organism is dead at the root.

    When to Use Which

Here is a simple rule of thumb:

    - **Hard surfaces** (concrete, brick, stone) = pressure washing

    - **Painted or delicate surfaces** (weatherboards, plaster, roofs) = soft washing

    - **Not sure?** Start gentle and increase pressure only if needed

I have seen the damage caused by using a pressure washer on surfaces that could not handle it — blown paint, gouged timber, water forced behind cladding. It is not pretty, and it is expensive to fix.

    Can You Do Both?

Absolutely. On many jobs we use both methods. We might soft wash the house exterior to kill mould and algae, then pressure wash the driveway and paths separately. It is about matching the method to the surface, not forcing one approach onto everything.

    The Bottom Line

If you are not sure which method your property needs, that is exactly what we assess on every job. We look at your cladding type, paint condition, and the level of soiling, then choose the right approach for each surface.
